What do I “hack” on and how is it judged?

The goal of this event is to work on something that otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to be explored before.

Think of the one thing you really wanted to do, but your day-to-day duties have gotten in the way. This Hackathon is the perfect time to get it done!

To ensure your hack will bring value, first, observe at what your department is struggling with, but hasn’t had the time to solve. If nothing comes to mind, look elsewhere within your company for any known pain points. Also, try to take in the perspective of one of your customers - do they have something you are certain they are struggling with?

You are more than welcome to work on something unrelated and spontaneous, but know that judging will be looking projects that are not only creative, but also that will create significant impact. See the judging criteria for more details.

If I don’t have a project, can I still participate?

Of course you can! You have a few options here:

  1. If you are not a part of a project, make yourself discoverable to other participants by applying expertise to your Account profile and mark yourself as “Looking for Project” on the Participants page.
  2. Some participants will already have projects, but are looking for some added assistance. Browse the current project submissions and filter by teams “Accepting Teammates”. There, you can drill down even further by filtering by “Expertise needed” to see if you have skills they are seeking.
  3. If you can’t find a project, head over to Discord and announce yourself as open for a team. Also, use the Participants page to discover and collaborate with other participants and build a team together!
I want to start or join a team - what should I look for?

Typically, the strongest Hackathon teams are usually the most diverse. The best way for you to find success within a team is to possess a unique skill or expertise.

If you find yourself on a team with people of similar skillsets, you should perhaps look elsewhere where your strengths will be more in need.

Can I join multiple teams?

Yes, although individuals can join multiple projects in round 1, you will need to choose only 1 project for round 2.

Can I participate remotely?

Yes, this event is mostly online, with some in person localised sessions around the world. We recommend a stable internet connection for video sessions.

I live in the EU, US or UK. Can I participate?

Yes, this is a global event, and the more the merrier!

Where can I get a copy of the T&Cs?

Click this link for a copy of the Participant Terms. These are the Event Terms which are separate to the BrightIdea portal terms when first registering for the platform.

What are the themes?

We will release detailed problem statements for each theme closer to the event. For now, please see the 3 themes on offer on the main page.

I am a start up and want to pitch my company

If you want to sell your product or service, this may not be the event for you. If, however, you want to participate in the event to build, learn and experiment, then we want you! It is a great way to network and get in front of leaders.
